India deploys AI to monitor endangered snow leopards

India’s Wildlife Institute has deployed AI-powered camera traps in the Himalayas to monitor snow leopard populations. Each unit can recognize individual leopards based on unique rosette patterns and transmit real-time health data. Jointly developed with a Bangalore startup, the system has already recorded 12 different leopards in Uttarakhand. Decreased poaching incidents have been observed since implementation. Researchers hope the data will help establish wildlife corridors and inform conservation policies across the corridor from India to Bhutan.
